BGC PARTNERS RAISES OVER $10 MILLION ON FIFTH ANNUAL GLOBAL CHARITY TRADING DAY
– Total raised for charity over five years tops $33 million –
LONDON, NEW YORK, PARIS, SINGAPORE (September 16, 2009) – BGC Partners, Inc. (Nasdaq: BGCP), one of the world’s leading inter-dealer brokers, announced today that it raised over $10 million for charity on its fifth annual global Charity Day held on Friday, 11 September 2009, bringing the total over four years to more than $33 million. Every year on September 11, BGC donates its global revenues to charity in commemoration of those lost in the World Trade Center attacks.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and TV presenters Jonathan Ross, Lisa Snowdon, Carol Vorderman and Gail Porter were among the celebrities swapping the small screen for the trading screen as part of the Charity day in London. Alongside other well-known faces such as cricketer Sir Ian Botham, snooker player Jimmy White, former England rugby captain Martin Johnson, singer Beverley Knight and society IT girl, Tara Palmer -Tompkinson, they all took part in trading and raising money for selected charities.
In New York, Lady Gaga sang her hit Poker Face for customers over the phone in return for trading with BGC’s brokers. She was joined by over 40 celebrity guests including athletes Eli Manning, Boomer Esiason, Oksana Baiul, Rod Gilbert, Brian Leetch, John Starks and Kym Hampton, TV personalities including Alexis Glick, Liz Claman, Deirdre Bolton, Natalie Morales and actors such as Lorraine Bracco, Sebastian Stan, Whoopi Goldberg, Gary Sinese and Anthony Edwards.
Elsewhere around the world BGC was joined by a number of celebrities in many of its global offices including Paris, Singapore and Sydney.
Shaun Lynn, President of BGC, said “We are delighted to have been able to increase the total raised yet again, this time to in excess of $10 million in one day, for dozens of charities around the world. Particular thanks go to our clients, and to our brokers, who every year help raise such tremendous sums for worthy causes. And of course we couldn’t do it without the generous help and support of our celebrity guests, who graciously donate their time and energy to the day in many of our global offices.”
Revenues from the day will be donated to a number of charities around the world. In the UK these include Barnardo’s, Breast Cancer Care, Centrepoint, Children in Crisis, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Dreams Come True, Help for Heroes, Leukaemia Research, Msizi Africa, Multiple Sclerosis, Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, Richard House Children’s Hospice, Roundhouse, Scope, Sparks, Students Partnership Worldwide, St Paul’s Cathedral Foundation, Teenage Cancer Trust, The British Red Cross, The Children’s Trust, The Marina Dalglish Appeal, The Paul Hunter Foundation, The Prince’s Trust, The Variety Club, Tommy’s and Winston’s Wish.
In the US charities include The Wounded Warrior Project, Boomer Esiason Foundation, The Children’s Institute, Mercy Center, The Valerie Fund, Childhelp, Garden of Dreams, Jubilee Center, Bone Marrow Foundation, Coast to Coast Against Cancer, QSAC, Friends of the Fighting 69th and Harlem RBI.
